A trip down Memory Lane

I am trying to get rid of what I really don’t need, and one area that’s most challenging is in the “fashion files” collection. Anna Sui calls them her “genius files”, and I call mine..getting out of control. I think we fashion people tend to do this, hold onto images, magazines, fabric scraps, etc for future reference. While I think this is an excellent idea, considering I am 24 and have been keeping bits of fashion info since I was 12 or so, I really need to sort through it. Today I came upon this crumpled old Delias catalog from 1997! I totally wore all these sorts of things....everything from the Julias the Monkey Paul Frank stuff to the uber-rounded toe maryjane chunky heels and back. I even had some of that hair streaking weird gel pictured here from Cover Girl in blue. Yeah, I was cool.... Yikes! OK, but one thing I am glad of, I never wore those horrible huge Jinco jeans, or whatever they were called? Eww. In ten more years, I will be proud to say I never wore Crocs.

Liers and trouble makers

Two new ones I did. The first is a silly girl who lies to everyone about the most outlandish things. Even the dog can see through her deception! The next is a girl who just spent $30.00 at Agent Provocateur for knee highs to compliment her haute couture look, only to find the kitten destroyed one! By the way, I have a new-ish kitten named Athena. She was a stray baby cat we found starving to death in January and we took her in to nurse her back to health. She is now playful and wonderful, but perhaps likes to scratch up thing a bit too much. Oh well, she’s my sweet little kitten.

Quick quick quick!

I spent the better part of Saturday drawing my “Critic’s Darling” ladies. As much fun as THEY are to draw, sometimes I just want a break to do something totally different, and draw organically and quickly from my stream of consciousness. The rules are don’t use any tool that can be erased, and nothing is considered wrong or bad, and draw really quick. I think too many people completely give up on drawing because they think they aren’t any good. But sometimes the quirkiness is the best, you know?  Here are two I did today. The face is so ugly it’s kooky, and it make me smile.

Happy Birthday and Happy Mothers Day!

Today is my Dad’s birthday! He is the sweetest, most positive-thinking, hardest working, most generous, and kind dad I could ever wish for. Then of course, tomorrow is Mother’s Day. My Mom is loving, selfless, a kid at heart, a hard worker, and a great artist. I’m so glad I have them both.

Beacon’s Closet inspired drawing

This is a new drawing I did this past weekend inspired by a personal experience at my favorite thrift store Beacon’s Closet. If you are ever in NYC, go here for sure! It’s full of wonderful vintage finds and designer thrift pieces. I’ve gotten some amazing deals there! Of course, there are always those times when money is very tight and you find SEVERAL vintage dresses that you, in all honestly, cannot live without. This happened to me. A cold January day, I stood in the lovely pink fitting room with three very Carrie Bradshaw-esque dresses and a Cacharel top..and knee high vintage pirate boots...in my size. One was a crisp white cotton tie waist lacy 70’s Jessica McClintock sun dress, that buttoned down the front and had sweet lace details. The next was a cream colored 1950’s full skirt dress with pink and red roses along the bottom, and pink bows at the strap. It was VERY old, yet so modern! The next was a strapless silk red, pink, and green floral printed summer dress, several sizes too big, but too cute to pass up. Trying on each, I really could not let any one of them go. I had to make a choice, food or clothing It was easy, the dresses were mine! And you know what? To this day I am glad I got them!
