Saks, in the USSA

Oh boy, another sign of the times…Saks Fifth Avenue tapped into the zeitgeist here in America, socialist and communist associations and policies are becoming increasingly, chic, so it seems. All the meanwhile nails are being hammered into the coffin of capitalism, the very system that has allowed an expensive store like Saks to thrive and grow since it’s founding. Oh the irony! haha!

Shepard Fairey, who also designed the,“Obey“ posters for Dear Leader, Obama, was the artist behind this campaign for Saks. Mr. Fairey states in this NYTs article, “it’s a way of grabbing attention. It’s commerce. I don’t think there is really any political statement embedded in this.” Regardless of how you look at it, innocent advertising or otherwise, the semiotics embedded in this particular art direction choice is interesting, given the current political environment.

Quick quick quick!

I spent the better part of Saturday drawing my “Critic’s Darling”  ladies. As much fun as THEY are to draw, sometimes I just want a break to do something totally different, and draw organically and quickly from my stream of consciousness. The rules are don’t use any tool that can be erased, and nothing is considered wrong or bad, and draw really quick. I think too many people completely give up on drawing because they think they aren’t any good. But sometimes the quirkiness is the best, you know?  Here are two I did today. The face is so ugly it’s kooky, and it make me smile.
