Marie Antoinette Halloween Costume
After the last post I got to thinking about what I should be for Halloween this year. First I decided to be Amy Winehouse, but the more I got to thinking about it, the more I realized 1.) it was kind of mean to make a joke out of her condition, and 2.) the costume wouldn’t be much more than a big bouffant wig, and some “normal-ish” street clothes. Since the exciting part of Halloween is the costume, I opted instead to be Marie Antoinette! Frothy, too-sweet, over-the-top girly-ness? Love it!
Though I love the 17th century dresses, I don’t want to go the authentic route. I prefer to do something more...Betsey Johnson-esque (short, sweet, floral, and cute). I actually found quite a few varieties of ready-made costumes available throughout the internet and on e-bay. They will cost about $70- $90 though, and personally I don’t want to pay that much for something I won’t wear much.
Besides, the most fun is in CREATING the costume! This Simplicity pattern (#0516) is perfect if you are wanting to make your own! Here was my initial quick sketch/ rough draft:
I got all the fabric, exactly the fabric I had HOPED to find (!!) and all on clearance! I also got a wig on ebay for $10, have 3 potential shoe options already in my closet (leaning toward pink rose printed Irregular choice shoes), and will hunt for stockings once the dress is done and I know exactly what I want. If you are planning to do this as your costume, check out Sock Dreams! I have posted a few below that would be perfect for this theme!
If you are not into sewing and still want to put together your own costume here’s an idea! Follow Christina’s example and pair a corset top with a skirt and petticoat. Too much skin? Make a corset tank and wear it with a ruffled skirt!
Join me as I make this, I will post it when I’m done! In the meantime, for inspiration check out this blog and this one!
